Program Destinations

The Toyota International Teacher Program currently travels to the Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica. The programs both focus on ways in which U.S. teachers can incorporate environmental education into their classrooms through interdisciplinary and solution-centered approaches.
The Toyota International Teacher Program to Costa Rica has been running for three years. Teachers explore the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica and learn about natural and cultural preservation. Teachers also explore themes of sustainable resource use and biodiversity conservation through site visits, discussions, lectures and hands-on activities. While in Costa Rica, program participants also meet with environmental experts, visit museums, and get to participate in activities in the rainforest. Participants get exclusive access to Costa Rica's premier scientists as well as environmental and cultural organizations. A highlight of the study visit is the school visits. Participants are invited to rural Costa Rican primary and secondary schools to spend the day observing classes and interacting with teachers and students.

Three groups of teachers have traveled on the Toyota International Teacher Program to the Galapagos Islands. With this program, participants gain valuable insight into the human impact on this fragile ecosystem. Teachers explore environmental solutions through panel discussions, lectures, and through interactions with local teachers and citizens. The program has already helped create lasting ties between U.S. and Galapagueño educators. Program participants also meet with biologists and conservationists as they explore the natural wonders of this World Heritage Site. Click here for a sample itinerary.
